Hi ho, it’s off to school I go!

I’m heading back to school! Excited to be working towards my Masters of Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, SCAD. I’m grateful to have received a Fellowship Scholarship, too. So here I go! Yay!

It’s a lot of work! But I’m happy to be doing it, even if it means my golf game suffers. :) But seriously, my homework is reading, writing, painting—all things I love to do!

Value Study and Contour Drawing for class Still Lifes

Classes are online, so students can attend from anywhere in the world. My classroom has folks from the USA, Canada, and Brazil. We range in age, and many in my cohort are working full-time. SCAD makes it easy for asynchronous students to access the courses anytime via ZOOM.

For me, it’s really cool to see how each of us interprets homework assignments. Everyone has a point of view and a unique artistic style. I’m enjoying being part of a community of artists again.

I’ll admit feeling nervous and intimidated by the newness of going back to school, especially in a virtual classroom setting. There’s been a lot to learn about the SCAD website and how to navigate information and class materials, like: “Where do I access school emails?” And, “How do I get into the virtual Blackboard?” (A workspace that has course info, assignment briefs, grades, class discussions, etc. - command central!) But, my Professors and Graduate Advisors have been very helpful and orientation videos explain how to access resources if extra help is needed.

For my first quarter, I’m taking just one class, “Formal Aspects of Painting”. It’s essentially a refresher on Elements of Design: Line, Color, Form, Shape, Value, Space and Texture. We’re painting still life images, and, will be transcribing a Master Painting. I’m going to paint the Mona Lisa! My model? My husband! His three-quarter profile will no doubt look very interesting. :)

I’ve always seen myself as a perpetual student. Here at 61, I’m as interested as ever! Why stop now?  I’m happy to be wandering, wondering, and creating my way to an MFA! Whoo-hoo!
